Alexandria Lee Sisson, known as Alexa, brings extensive experience in education and social justice. After four years of teaching in a Montessori classroom as a general educator and ʻIke Hawaiʻi specialist, they have honed their skills as a school DEI coordinator through creating resources, hosting professional development workshops, and conducting equity audits. Alexa’s dedication to equity and social change extends beyond the classroom, serving on the American Montessori Society’s Think Tank focused on DEIB in Montessori, and on CorePower Yoga’s national DEIB council.

Alexa’s passion for DEIB is deeply rooted in their experiences, beginning with their move from Honolulu to Berlin at seventeen. Working with refugee children in Germany sparked her dedication to equity in education. Their journey has since included research on Hawaiian values in education, roles with the UN Institute of Training and Research, and leadership in diversity initiatives. For Alexa, DEIB work in Hawaiʻi is about justice, intentional development, and cultural awareness while staying grounded in Hawaiian values. They envision a community where DEIB becomes more accessible and meaningful, driving tangible change in educational spaces.

As Teacher Fellow at Shanti Alliance, Alexa supports the team in facilitating events at the annual conference. They believe in creating intentional, safe, spaces for DEIB work that honor ʻike Hawaiʻi, ʻike ʻāina, and ʻike kūpuna, ensuring that education is rooted in cultural context and kuleana.

When she’s not teaching or advocating for DEIB, Alexa enjoys teaching yoga at four studios across town, reading fantasy novels at the beach, and playing video games. Last year, she aimed to read 100 new books, reaching an impressive 86. This year, she’s embracing the ebb and flow of life with a quieter pace.
