Mario Orlando Flores has dedicated the last 30 years to arts education and administration, with a rich background that includes roles as an ensemble conductor and music educator. He holds a B.A. with Honors in Music from Brown University, an M.A. in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Fellowship in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. Mario’s experience extends across multiple DEI initiatives, with extensive involvement in GSA chapters, the People of the Color Conference (POCC), Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), and the National Association of Independent Schools’ (NAIS) Diversity Leadership Institute, highlighting his deep commitment to fostering inclusive environments.

Mario’s dedication to DEIB is shaped by his personal experiences as a gay Latino learner and educator in independent school settings. He is passionate about creating spaces that truly recognize, value, and uplift the voices of all community members, with a strong emphasis on a student-centered approach. His commitment is inspired by his journey and his desire to advocate for building inclusive schools while honoring place-based traditions and cultures, and with an ʻāina-focused approach. 

At Shanti Alliance, Mario is instrumental in shaping the student experience at our DEIB conference and spearheading professional development workshops. His role also includes leading events on the Big Island, including the Big Island Shanti Alliance Kick-off events and supporting Shanti Alliance cohorts at Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy, where he serves as Director of Music, Arts Department Chair, and Culture & Belonging Co-Coordinator.

In his downtime, Mario finds joy in cooking and in spending time with his partner and two dogs. His enthusiasm for food, family, and community brings a personal and genuine touch to his work at Alliance.
